Media, Entertainment & the Arts

The firm has nearly 40 years experience of giving advice in the entertainment industry generally and having particular experience with recording and music publishing, acting for artists, writers, producers and managers as well as many independent record and publishing companies.

We have seen the changes brought about by technology during that time, ranging from the decline of vinyl, the MTV phenomenon and the rise and fall of the Compact Disc. We have also lived through changes in the live music scene as it has grown from its ‘pub rock’ roots to embrace music festivals and club culture.

The Internet has brought about profound changes and our experience serves us well as we advise our media and entertainment clients on the multitude of legal issues that they face in a world of downloads, streaming and 360 degree deals. The wheel may have been greatly modified but it has not been entirely reinvented and the basic rules of copyright (and, for that matter, human nature) remain largely unchanged.

We have developed specialist legal knowledge relating to the online exploitation of intellectual property assets, particularly in association with marketing and advertising activity (e.g. the production and licensing of so-called ‘branded content’).

We provide advice both to start-ups and to established bands, brands and businesses. We understand the pressures and problems implicit in establishing and maintaining a successful career or business and take pride in our long-standing relationships with our clients who trust us to take care of their legal and business affairs.

Aside from offering commonsense advice our work for our clients includes drafting and negotiating:

  • Recording agreements
  • Group partnership agreements
  • Joint venture agreements
  • Record production agreements
  • Record producer/mixer/remixer agreements
  • Sample clearances
  • Music publishing and administration agreements
  • Physical/digital distribution agreements
  • Licensing and lease tape agreements
  • Master use and synchronization licenses
  • Management/agency agreements
  • Media licensing agreements
  • Film, TV and content production agreements
  • Talent Clearances
  • Book publishing agreements
  • Brand licensing agreements

The firm is also proud to have a longstanding involvement with the London Art Scene and represents both art galleries and a number painters and sculptors who have achieved international recognition.

Both David Gentle and Bob Page are recognized as experts in the field of Media and Entertainment.

Matrimonial & Family

Family breakdown is always difficult, and frequently involves complex and far-reaching financial adjustments at a time when you are emotionally vulnerable. It is a considerable benefit and may even be crucial that you work with a Solicitor whom you can trust and who will deal with these matters in a professional but sensitive manner.

  • Financial Settlements on Divorce

It is highly advantageous to seek an early agreement with your spouse if possible, although it will always be necessary to deal with all matters relating to your finances in an open and transparent manner if this is to be achieved and approved by the Court.

Once proceedings are issued strict timetables for disclosure need to be adhered to.

  • Children Matters

We deal with residence, contact and child maintenance disputes. The best interests of the children are the paramount consideration and we encourage agreement between parents wherever possible.

  • Cohabitation

There are often issues to be resolved between unmarried “partners” that require similar consideration and we are able to assist in negotiating and drafting trust agreements in relation to ownership of property as well as the increasing trend toward prenuptial agreements which may in some circumstances now be enforceable.

Wills & Probate

It is very important to make a Will. Should you die intestate (i.e. without having made a Will) you could seriously jeopardise the future security of dependants and loved ones as the Intestacy Rules often work unfairly. For example, the Intestacy Rules work on direct bloodlines and do not take account of unmarried partners - however long you have lived together.

By making a Will you can:

  • ensure that your money and property passes to the people you want in the way that you want
  • include legacies to individuals and charities
  • choose the executors who will administer your estate
  • appoint guardians to look after your children
  • plan your affairs to save on Inheritance Tax
  • ensure that your spouse or partner always has a home
  • give rights of occupation to children who are still living at home on your death
  • ensure that the value of your share in your home ultimately passes to your children should your partner remarry after your death

We offer a comprehensive Will drafting service. Also, if you wish to appoint the firm as an executor of your Will you can be assured of an efficient and sympathetic administration of your estate by specialist professionals. You will also avoid any problem caused by your executors predeceasing you or being unwilling/unable to act.

We handle the administration and winding-up of estates, including applications for probate, liaising with experts to obtain valuations, asset realization and the preparation of estate accounts.

Bob Page

Bob trained with a niche music and entertainment firm under the guidance of David Gentle. He qualified as a Solicitor in 1994. He became a partner in that firm from 1999 until it dissolved in 2001. After spending the next 7 years as a partner in his own firm Bob was very pleased to renew his partnership with David Gentle in April 2009, a move which was influential in shaping the current identity of the firm.

Bob worked on contentious matters at the point of his qualification almost exclusively; he then spent several years establishing a practice in the music industry. Over time his practice has evolved so that he now spends his time dealing with a broad spectrum of contractual, commercial and corporate matters for a clientele drawn primarily from media, entertainment, publishing and other creative industries - increasingly with an online focus - although he maintains a litigation practice as he considers this gives invaluable perspective in approaching commercial issues. He works for clients ranging from private individuals to multinational corporations on a wide variety of business affairs. Equally he enjoys the diverse challenges that working in general private practice brings, undertaking for example contentious and non-contentious employment work for high-level executives and employers. He strives to demystify the workings of the Law for his clients so that they are empowered to make informed commercial decisions; having worked closely with creative people over many years Bob is very familiar with the stresses and strains that commerce places upon them.

Bob is a recognized legal expert on matters relating to the music and media industries.
